SCRNCSTR

Most of these only work on the arrange and recording screens, in Combined mode - they act on the webcam overlay and the canvas it is drawn on, and the other modes have neither. They are live during a recording, so everything here lands in the file.

Placing the webcam

1-6

Jump to a hot spot - the six numbered dots on the preview. It glides rather than jumps, and drops out of full-frame if you were in it.

0

Full-frame webcam, and back. The zoom itself is recorded.

k

Keep your webcam out of the recording while still seeing it yourself.

r

Reset the webcam to its default position - the escape hatch if it ends up somewhere you cannot reach.

With the webcam overlay focused

←→↑↓

Move it. Hold Shift for bigger steps.

+ -

Resize it.

Effects

l

A film-leader countdown: half a second of black, then 3-2-1. Covers the frame for 2.9 seconds in all, so talk over it - it is a "watch this next" beat, not decoration. The black at the front is a handle for editing later.

c

Confetti.

f

Fireworks.

h

Hearts.

b

Blank the screen - hides your screen from the recording without stopping it. Your face, watermark and timer stay visible.

Drawing on the screen

p

Pick up the pen. Press it again for the next of your five colours.

i

Pick up the highlighter. Press it again for the next of your four colours.

e

Eraser: rub out whatever you drag over.

Shift+E

Eraser for whole lines: click or drag across a line to remove all of it.

x

Clear all the drawing. Undo brings it back.

n

Save the drawing as a page, then clear the screen for the next slide. Saved pages download as a PDF or as PNG images.

Ctrl+Z

Undo a drawing change (Cmd+Z works too).

Ctrl+R

Redo (so do Ctrl+Y and Ctrl/Cmd+Shift+Z). On these screens it does not reload the page.

Esc

Put the tool down, so the mouse moves your webcam again.

Right-click a colour (or long-press it on a touch screen) to change it to any colour you like - it is remembered for next time. The drawing goes over your screen and under your face, and over Blank screen too, so Blank doubles as a whiteboard. Whatever is still drawn when a recording stops is saved as a page for you. Saved pages stay until you close the tab - they are never stored or uploaded.

A screen and webcam recorder that runs entirely in your browser. Nothing is uploaded, there is no server, and no analytics - recordings are written straight to your disk.

The three modes

• Separate files - a clean screen recording plus a full-frame webcam recording. Two files, nothing baked in. Place the webcam in your editor.
• Combined - one finished file with your face already in it. Two ways of getting it there, below.
• Screen only - screen and narration, no camera.

Combined: how your face gets in

• Composite it in - drawn onto the video as a circle, rounded rectangle or square. Any shape, positioned from the preview. Adjustable while recording, but only while you can see this window.
• Pop-out only - no compositing. The floating camera window is physically on your screen, so the capture records it. Rectangular, but full quality and draggable the whole time.

What you share matters - and it flips

• Every mode except pop-out: share a single window so this app stays out of the shot.
• Pop-out mode is the opposite - it needs a whole screen. Share one window and the floating camera is not captured, so your face will be missing entirely.

Audio

• Separate files keep your voice in the webcam file and system audio in the screen file, so they stay separable.
• Single-file modes have one audio track, so voice and system audio are mixed permanently. Tick save my mic as its own file to keep a clean copy of your voice.

Keyboard

• 1-6 jump the webcam to a hot spot (Composite mode) - the numbered dots on the preview. It glides rather than jumps, so the move looks deliberate in the recording.
• r resets the webcam to its default position - the escape hatch if it ever ends up somewhere you cannot reach.
• l countdown, c confetti, f fireworks, h hearts, b blanks the screen, k keeps your webcam out of the recording, 0 full-frame webcam. Press ? anywhere for the full list.
• Webcam overlay focused: arrows move it, + / - resize, hold Shift for bigger steps.
• Esc closes this dialog.

Overlay controls (Composite mode)

• Blank screen (b) - hides your screen from the recording without stopping it. Your face, watermark and timer stay visible, so you can keep talking while you deal with whatever appeared. It always resets between takes.
• Logo - a watermark drawn onto the recording. Choose a text badge, one of the two built-in marks, or upload your own image. An uploaded image is kept in this browser on this machine and is never sent anywhere. It is drawn after the webcam, so it stays visible when you cut to full frame.
• Keep the webcam out of the recording (k, the circle-and-slash) - the mirror of Blank screen. Your camera keeps running and you keep seeing yourself; the recording simply stops including you. The overlay goes dashed and says not recorded, because this is the one place where what you see is deliberately not what you get. The pop-out window keeps working too. It is not a substitute for choosing Screen only up front, which never asks for the camera at all.
• Full-frame webcam (0) - the webcam zooms up to fill the whole frame and back again. The zoom itself is recorded, so it reads as an intentional cut to camera.
• Confetti (c) - a burst that falls through the frame and clears itself. Costs nothing when idle.
• Fireworks (f) - five staggered shells that climb and burst. Hearts (h) float up from the bottom. Both clear themselves the same way.
• Countdown (l) - the cinema academy leader: half a second of flat black, then crosshairs, a ringed circle, a hand sweeping once per numeral, and 3-2-1. 2.9 seconds in all. Unlike the others it is opaque - covering the frame is what a leader is for, and it is what makes it read as deliberate rather than as an overlay that leaked in. Talk over it. The black at the front is deliberate breathing room for the edit: a frame with nothing on it is easy to find when scrubbing and gives you somewhere to cut.
• Show timer on screen - burns the elapsed time into the recording as a pill in the top-left. Off by default. Your own timer in the control bar is always there regardless, and both read the same clock, so both stop when you pause.

Adding your own sounds

• Drop a file in this folder named sfx-applause, sfx-trombone, sfx-celebrate, sfx-laugh or sfx-rimshot, with any of .mp3 .wav .m4a .ogg. No renaming needed.
• A file always beats the synthesized version, and .mp3 is tried first - so dropping in an mp3 overrides a wav of the same name without deleting anything.
• Hover a sound button to see which you are hearing: a synthesized fallback says so in its tooltip.
• Reload after adding a file; sounds are loaded once at startup.

Sound credits

The five bundled sounds are CC0 1.0 (public domain dedication) from Freesound. No attribution is required under CC0 - this is here because the people who recorded them deserve the credit anyway. Each has been trimmed and level-matched for use here.

• Applause - “Concert audience applause 5” by thaighaudio

• Sad trombone - “wah wah sad trombone” by kirbydx

Pause

• Pause genuinely cuts the paused span out - the file is shorter, not padded with a frozen frame. Works in every mode.
• Compositing stops while paused, so it costs nothing to leave paused.

Installing

• Use the Install button in the header, or Chrome's own install icon in the address bar. It then opens in its own window with no browser chrome - which also keeps that chrome out of your recordings.
• It launches offline. Web fonts are the one thing not cached, so offline the type falls back to your system fonts. Nothing breaks.

Requirements

• Chrome or Edge, served over https or from localhost.
• System audio capture needs Chrome 141+ on macOS 14.2+.
• Choosing a save folder streams to disk as you record - worth doing for anything longer than a few minutes.
